A forward-thinking facility with national attention

Borgaredalen Environmental Park in Karmøy, Norway, opened in 2025.
Borgaredalen Environmental Park is a large and complex facility where many functions are gathered in one location. Omega 365 Protek was responsible for the design of the main building, including the roof structure and sorting bays, and was closely involved in the planning phase together with users and other specialists. Space programming, dimensions, logistics, and interior solutions were defined as part of this work. The facility has strict requirements related to safety and functionality, including the handling of hazardous waste with explosion risk, which influenced both construction and room design.
“A holistic approach was required, covering everything from ventilation and material choices to safety for both employees and the public. Emphasis was also placed on cleanliness, hygiene, and robust solutions that can withstand heavy use over time. The facility also includes good break rooms and amenities for employees working on site,” says Pål Hystad at Omega 365 Protek, who was the project contact.

Safe logistics for users and heavy transport
A key premise in the design of Borgaredalen Environmental Park was safe and clear organization of traffic and logistics. The facility handles both private vehicles delivering waste and heavy transport related to container handling and further waste management.
“The aim has been to create a facility that is clear, safe, and easy to use, while allowing operations to run efficiently in the background,” says Hystad.
At the environmental park, public areas and internal operations are separated. Visitors are guided along clearly defined access routes, while container handling and internal transport take place in dedicated zones with no interaction with the public.

From early sketches to completed facility
After drawings and plans were finalized, Omega 365 Protek continued into the detailed design phase in close collaboration with the contractor Veidekke and other disciplines within construction, concrete elements, piping, and technical installations.
Borgaredalen Environmental Park was completed just before Christmas, with handover and official opening taking place in late November. For Omega 365 Protek, following the project through to completion added value.
“It is rewarding to see a project realized after a long process. There is much to learn from being involved throughout the entire journey, from early sketches and redesigns to cost assessments and final construction,” says Hystad.

A facility gaining attention
“We used to be among the worst in the class. Now we are among the best,” said Karmøy’s Head of Renovation, Torbjørn Heggheim, during a presentation at the new Borgaredalen Environmental Park when the Minister of Climate and Environment visited.
Although the facility has only recently started operations, it has already delivered strong results. During a test conducted in autumn 2025, 96.7% of plastic packaging was sorted correctly, placing Karmøy among the top-performing municipalities in Norway.
During his visit, Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen highlighted both the technology and the systematic approach in use.
“Several municipalities can draw inspiration from this. Karmøy has shown that it is possible to involve people in change processes within a short timeframe,” said the minister during the tour.
